Eye Bags Causes

Eye bags causes can originate from different aspects of our lives. The causes of eye bags can derive from our lifestyle, health or even natural causes such as getting old and advanced with age.

What Causes Puffy Eyes

What causes puffy eyes is not to be confused with eye bags that are naturally resulted from old age. This is especially so when the puffiness come with swollen eyelids, indicating the presence of fluid or inflammation. More often than not under eye puffiness is caused by either our unhealthy habits in the way we eat or live or underlying health conditions.

How To Get Rid of Under Eye Bags by Changing Out Unhealthy Lifestyle Choices

One of the ways how to get rid of our under eye bags is by changing out unhealthy lifestyle choices such as poor diet, bad sleeping habits, smoking, drinking, etc.

Poor Diet

A poor and imbalanced diet means one is likely to suffer from certain nutrient deficiencies. Studies have shown that a lack of Vitamin B, in particular Vitamin B1, has an impact on poor circulatory health issues. Vitamin B1, Thiamine, can be found in protein-rich foods such as meat, beans, grains and nuts and are efficient in converting food into energy and the metabolism of glucose which in turn regulate the fluid movements in our body, reducing swells and fluid retention.

A deficiency in magnesium is also known to have caused an increase bloating and water retention in our body system.

Cut Down on Salt/ Sodium intake

Cutting down on salt and sodium intake can also help to reduce under eye bags and puffiness. Salty meals can cause excess bloating in our face and body. Avoid eating high-sodium foods such as canned food, processed foods such as preserved and salted dried snacks, smoked and cured foods like hams and sausages, etc.

Avoid Drinking Water just Before bed

While drinking water in moderation an hour before bed time is good for blood circulation for better cellular repair over night as we sleep, consuming liquids just before bed disrupts your sleep as you may need to wake up a few times in the middle of the night to urinate. Even if you can sleep throughout the night without having to release yourself, the water load burdens the heart and kidneys. So either way, the disruption to your sleep cycle or the prevention of water discharge can lead to the formation of swollen eye bags and puffiness around the eyes.

Bad or Late Sleeping habits

Lack of sleep can cause heavy eye lids and bags under the eyes to form indirectly. Sleep deprivation may directly cause the blood vessels under our eyes to dilate due to longer hours of straining and the lack of hydration when you refuse to rest your eyes by the time they should. This causes under eye dark circles to form as the skin under the eyes experience lower blood pressure, leading to paler and duller skin around the eyes. The constant widening of the blood vessels causes the loss in elasticity of tissue under our eyes over time.

Smoking and Drinking of Alcohols

The nicotine in cigarettes causes one to lose his or her sleeping pattern due to the changes in mood, heart rate, blood pressure, etc. As such, smokers tend to lose their sleep and develop a sleeping disorder over time, weakening of the skin structure around their eyes, causing them to develop under eye bags and puffiness.

Drinking alcohols causes our body to be dehydrated. Dehydration in turn causes our skin to lose plumpness and elasticity. Over time, the consumption of alcohols can affect the suppleness and firmness in our skin, causing the skin around our eyes to sag, forming eye bags and puffy eyes as a result.

Eye Bags that need Medical Treatment

Eye bags due to underlying health conditions require medical treatment for that specific health issue that is causing them. Puffy or swollen under eyes are usually an indication of fluid build-up in our body system that requires medical attention.

Health Medical Conditions

Kidney Deficiency

Reduced kidney functions can make you urinate less, therefore unable to get rid of excess waste in the body. This lymphatic dysfunction results in the retention of fluid as well as toxins, causing not only to the swelling of the ankles and legs but also to your limbs and face where fluid can be collected at the sacs under the eyes, leading to swollen puffy eye bags.

Dehydration

When we experience dehydration, this means that we lack water content in our bodies. Water deficiency results in poor fluid circulation in our body, which then leads to inefficient distribution and poor absorption of water by the body and skin. In this case, the skin loses the firmness in muscles as dryness sets in , causing fine lines and creases to form in our facial skin as well. This results in heavy skin folds including droopy under eye bags.

Inflammation

When we suffer from sinusitis, or any form of nasal congestion due to allergies, virus, bacteria like rhinitis, or even from crying, tears and muscus build up and block our nasal passages, causing fluid to fill up and germs to thrive in the sinus lining and tissue. If such a situation aggravates, the nasal cavities can become swollen and infected and become inflamed. As a result, the under eyes become puffy as fluid fills up sacs under the eyes, causing eye bags to develop.

Try placing an extra pillow beneath to prop up your head so that your body is in a slightly inclined position when you sleep so that gravity can help with muscus drainage for easier breathing as well as helping to de-puff those eye bags.

Causes of Eye Bags & Puffy Eyes that are inevitable

Genetics

Eye bags can be a hereditary trait from your biological genes. If prominent eye bags are one of your family members’ common characteristics , then chances are you are also not spared from being born with such features.

Aging

Our facial features are supported by muscles and fats. As we advance with age, we lose muscle mass due to slower rate in tissue growth as well as the shrinking of our muscle fibres. At the same time, the fat deposits in the muscle tissue loses volume and plumpness and so they tend to gravitate downwards. The fat deposits under our eyes becomes more prominent as we lose the fat in our cheeks previously firm enough to hold those under eye fats in place. As a result, over time, the bags under the eyes develop into protruding fat pouches in appearance.
