Chanel Comete: A Scent that Carries You to the Moon & Back
I’m going to talk about the latest addition to the Les Exclusifs de Chanel line – the Comete Eau de Parfum.
Let’s start with deconstructing this fragrance by looking at the constituent notes that define this creation.
Chanel has used words like luminous, intense, sensual, floral, powdery, musky, etc. Having worn the Comete for about a week now, I have to agree with these attributes. And the olfactive profile as it evolves are actually pretty cohesive when I started to piece together a narrative.
Comete Fragrance Notes
Comete has Cherry Blossom and Aldehydes as its top notes, Iris and Heliotrope as its middle notes, and Musk as its base note. Right off the bat, you know this isn’t going to indulge your fantasy beyond the firmament as much as the name sounds, because it just has too many ‘earthly’ notes. However the whole sensory journey with this fragrance is very telling of time, space and distance. Below is a short clip I put together a visual portal I think Comete is capable of opening us to.
Les Exclusifs de Chanel Comete Review
First Impression
Not quite like what you might hear, it doesn’t open sparkly or effervescent like “stardust” or champagne; at least not in the celebratory sense. The headspace out of its first spritz is like a cosmic invitation on its own. Chanel Comete opens up to a clean, crisp, bright “nebula”, figuratively speaking. It’s like a breath of life – luminous, rejuvenated and revitalized.
Opening
However this quality is quite translucent, almost ethereal, and so I guess that’s where the name Comete comes from, this opening facet comes from somewhere otherworldly and it’s fleeting. It isn’t the cold and metallic kind of scent one would expect after a spacewalk, because what unfurls the next second is warm and inviting with a musky undertone. I was a little surprised to smell musk this early since it’s in the base notes. Unfortunately I can’t really make out much of the cherry blossom even at this point. The aldehydes comes off stronger when on skin compared to on clothing during the opening. So the skin hits off to a more soapy clean scent, whereas on clothes, it shifts into a more resinous depth about half an hour to an hour in.
Heart Notes
I’ve worn it on cotton, viscose, and even denim, and generally speaking, fabric holds perfume better than the skin does, but with Chanel Comete, it performs quite differently as it goes into the core notes. Clothing seems to “moisten” the scent like there’s an underlying damp mineralic earthiness, while the skin wicks it off to a drier, greener sillage. The core experience of it all is warm, but not as free-spirited as one would’ve imagined; it is a more sensual and enveloping kind of warmth, like a warm hug on a rainy night. Like I can almost smell wet concrete everywhere at the same time. But the epicentre is intense with the sweet floral notes in full bloom, comparable to a passionate reunion; a rekindled romance after being years and miles apart.
No Time Nor Season
It is difficult to say which Season this fragrance is typically worn for, mostly because of how the musk paces itself in a little too quickly. Comete seems to have Spring encapsulated in a Wintery setting, and these two aren’t even transgressing in my opinion. Kinda incongruous, yet kinda complementary at the same time. If this scent were to be visible, it may well float in still air, rather than following a trail. My senses tell me that it is in suspension while the essence is still overflowing within. It’s almost like the world held its breath as it allows cosmic love to do its own thing.
Base Notes
Comete dries down to an after-rain shower sweet earthiness; not so much different from its core notes, except that now it has become more loamy and grounding, and somewhat closer to the forest floor. As circumstances would have it, the earlier floral sweetness has now transformed from just being nectarous to a richer and golden decadence.
Longevity
Chanel’s Comete lasts for days on my clothing and more than 8 hours on the skin. Bear in mind again that I’m situated in humid Singapore where volatility is naturally high.
My Chanel Comete Narrative
To put this fragrance in perspective, Comete just evokes a story of a long distance romance, particularly between a traveler and his lover. He invites her to his world beyond hers, and sends her back with the promise of their love. Even in their short time together, their worlds became one as their love flourished.
While Chanel’s Comete doesn’t necessarily embody any considerable interstellar or galactic characteristics, it does carry an element of stillness and a sense of isolation despite having a full heart. Since the Comete fragrance is inspired by the iconic Comete necklace, I’d be tempted to borrow a leaf out of that shooting star design in which it makes its orbital trajectory back to where it sets off from – a symbolic narrative of a longing wish coming true. That distance is just temporary, and true love will always find its way back.
Is this Chanel perfume for Men or Women?
I want this so bad to be for both men and women just because of the internal narrative I’ve been constructing. While Comete does not tell your conventional love story, the powdery and floral notes in Comete just scream femininity.
Who is Comete for?
Comete is for the one that has conquered all challenges in the spirit of love. It is the fragrance that embodies enduring faith, unwavering loyalty and most of it all, the promise of eternal love.
