Tarte Cosmetics Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer Review

So I’ve used up my Benefit Fake Up Under Eye Concealer and was on the hunt for something that is of a similar creamy consistency, around the same price point but with a peachier undertone to not only conceal but neutralize my dull undereye areas.

Colour correcting tutorials have taught me that peach and orange pigments cancel out bluish or purple skin tones. Though I don’t think my under eye areas are necessarily blue or purple, but I guess if they appear darker it means there is a lack of blood flow there and so they have to be something of cool tone that requires some warming up there to balance it out.

I went around a Sephora with a few swatches on concealer sticks and tube paste types and finally settled on the Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer.

Tarte Amazonian Concealer Review: Like a Smaller Foundation stick!

Consistency

I like that the Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer has an even softer consistency than the Benefit Fake Up Concealer; I tend to like softer texture in concealers because they can easily be pushed into the pores. I know the really creamy ones can do this too however they tend to slide more. Clay-based ones like this has more structure and holds makeup longer. The pigment game is strong – if you apply it all over the face I’m pretty sure the coverage is like how a foundation stick would give too.

Shades

They’ve got 6 to 7 shades in the store; I swatched them all, yes, because the disparities between each is not much. I got a little tanner lately (the photos may not appear so due to the strong daylight), the Light Medium Beige suits me just fine as it has the right amount of peach/ red pigment in it which I was looking for. Plus I don’t particularly go for ‘brightening’ concealers because I do not like that ashy overcast when applied on my dark circles. Look at the swatch below, the shade is actually not matte at all, it is in fact a little luminous and velvety.

Packaging

I love its packaging. It has the look of a small luxurious-looking pen. The cap is popped off easily and has a soft closure, almost magnetic-like, as you click it shut. The casing is light enough to be carried around in your purse for touch-ups.

Tarte on the Under Eye, Blemishes & Acne Scars Concealer Coverage Test Review

Verdict:

Below are my before and after pictures of using the Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer. I have several issues here – dark circles, age spots, redness, blemishes, acne and acne scars. After blending it out with my fingers I finished the skin makeup with the Laurier Mercier Pressed Setting Matte Translucent Powder on the under eye areas and the Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Powder Foundation on the rest of the face. Both powders are matte but you can still see the sheen underneath from the concealer coming through which is kinda a pleasant surprise. It gives that glow from within, not the artificial kind of glow that speckles on the outside.

Yes, it didn’t really do as near a perfect job in neutralizing my dark circles as I’d hope it to, but I understand mine is a rather severe puffy-cum-dark-circles case, it really isn’t that easy to diminish this flaw. Moreover the result isn’t ashy-looking like most of what my other concealers did. Besides that I’m happy with the coverage it gives to my other problems as mentioned.

What I love about the Formula of this Concealer

This concealer has a rich and super blendable formula which still holds on to the skin even when loose powder or powder foundation is dusted over. This is perhaps the biggest takeaway for clay based concealers compared to the cream formulas.

Tarte Cosmetics is a cruelty-free makeup company this we know, but I guess you’d also like to know that this product is free from parabens, mineral oil, phthalates (plasticizers), tricosan (chemical agents for preservation), sodium lauryl sulphate (surface detergent) and gluten (elasticizers), all of which can trigger skin allergies.

The 12-Hour Waterproof Promise?

As for the 12-hour waterproof quality, I can’t attest to the whole of 12 hours as I haven’t been wearing makeup this long.but if you take it through, say, 8 to 10 hours, yes, it stays on well albeit needing some blotting help in between because, like my Laneige BB Cream Cushion SPF 50 Foundation, this product is designed to be hydrophobic. Count on cooler days to save yourself from the embarrassment of droplets appearing on the skin if you’re a big sweater like me.
